Suzlon Energy Australia is planning to build a 180-turbines wind farm in South Australia that will generate 600 megawatts of energy and deliver power to 225,000 homes.

The $1.3 billion wind farm is to be built about 20 kilometres southwest of  Ardrossan on the Yorke Peninsula. The project will involve developing a high-voltage direct-current submarine connection across Gulf St Vincent to feed power to Adelaide.

If it goes ahead, the wind farm could be the largest in Australia and, possibly, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The largest wind farm currently under development in Australia is the 420 megawatt 140-turbine Macarthur Wind Farm being built by AGL Energy Limited and Meridian Energy in south-west Victoria.

A 168-turbine wind farm which will generate 504 megawatts of power is under development by Contact Energy and the Wind Farm Group.south of Port Waikato n New Zealand.

The project is expected to create 500 construction jobs and 50 ongoing jobs and to be completed by the end of 2015.
