The Sustainable Development Institute at Melbourne’s Monash University, has been awarded $27 million in funding for project that aims to revolutionise water delivery and sanitation in urban slums
The large, multidisciplinary project has received a $14 million research grant by the UK Wellcome Trust’s Our Planet Our Health awards plus further $13 million from the Asian Development Bank to cover infrastructure and construction costs.
The project aims to revolutionise water delivery to slums in urban areas, and will help rebuild 24 settlements in Indonesia and Fiji over five years.
This animation below shows typical slum and squatter settlements in the Asia-Pacific region and the types of urban water management innovations that can be used to accelerate health gains and deliver more sustainable and environmentally compatible solutions. The design and delivery of settlement revitalisations will be site specific and determined with community consultation and co-design process.
