Melbourne-based Wasabi Energy has purchased 50.5% of Shanghai Shenghe New Energy Co Ltd (SSNE), which is the licencee for Kalina Cycle power technology in China. SSNE also has Enhanced Rankine Cycle power technology patented throughout Asia. Both technologies use heat to generate electricity.

SSNE operates a 2 megawatt power plant producing electricity from a Pilkington glass factory near Shanghai and is developing power plants using waste heat from cement and petrochemical plants. The company is also in discussions with a view to developing power plants using geothermal heat sources in China and Taiwan.

Wasabi Energy already has power plants using geothermal energy in Iceland and Germany. The video below describes the use of the Kalina Cycle technology in a power plant in Unterhachng, Germany.
