Australia's first utility-scale solar farm has commenced operation.
The Greenough River Solar project, just outside the small town of Walkaway in Western Australia, is a joint-venture between Western Australian state-owned Verve Energy and General Electric. The plant is General Electric's first investment in solar power in Australia.
The Greenough River Solar project is expected to initially generate 10 megawatts and may eventually be expanded it to 40 megawatts.
Although the largest in Australia, the site is small by world standards. Sites with more than 200 megawatts capacity are in operation in the United States, China and India and sites up to 10,000 megawattes are being planned.
