The Australian Government is to cut several programs aimed at reducing climate change in order to release funding to repair the damage caused by floods which may well be the result of inadequate programs to reduce climate change.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that “We will cut some spending programs and cap some others. I am abolishing, deferring and capping access to a number of carbon abatement programs. These include the Green Car Innovation Fund, Cleaner Car Rebate Scheme, the Carbon Capture and Storage Flagships and Solar Flagships, the Solar Hot Water Rebate, Green Start Program, Solar Homes and Communities Plan and the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute.” (The Solar Homes and Communities Plan was cancelled in 2009.)
The Government is also introducing a levy and cutting or delaying some infrastructure projects to free up funds and skilled workers.
Ms Gillard said that more details will be released in coming days.
