South Australia’s Environment, Resources and Development Court has blocked development of a 46-turbine wind farm at Allendale East near Mount Gambier. The $175 million project by Acciona Enegy would have provided sufficiient power for about 43,000 homes.
The Court’s action was the result of an appeal by a local dairy farmer against the local Council’s approval of the project, based on its "visual amenity".
Handing down his judgment, Judge Jack Costello said that, although there was no “meaningful evidence” to support arguments of ill effects from noise or electromagnetic interference or of potential harm to health or flora and fauna, the introduction of 46 turbines into the landscape would be seen as “incongruous”.
Acciona may appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
