Aviemore Hydro Power Station

The Aviemore Power Station on the Waitaki River is a part of the Waitaki River Hydroelectric System which supplies 30% of New Zealand's hydroelectric power. It consists of eight power stations:

The Aviemore Dam contains four turbines of 55 MW each. The facility produces approximately 942 GWh of electricity per year. The net hydraulic head is 37 metres.

Construction began in 1962 and presented some unusual challenges. Because part of the dam had to be built across a fault line, it was constructed from both concrete and earth. It was completed in 1968 and is operated by Meridian Energy.
