Ngawha Geothermal Power Station

The Ngawha Geothermal Power Station, north of Whangerei, opened in 1998 with a generating capacity of about 8 MW. An expansion was completed in 2008, increasing the capacity to 25 MW.

The plant is owned and operated by Top Energy, and utilises a binary cycle manufactured by Ormat Industries. It consistently produces around 70% of all electricity consumed in the Far North.

Top Energy is proposing to expand the geothermal electricity generation capacity at the existing Ngawha power station by constructing two new 25MW power stations. The first of these power station could be commissioned in 2023.
