Sun Metals Townsville Solar Farm

Korean-owned Sun Metals has built a 124MW solar PV power plant to supply its zinc refinery located near Townsville, in northern Queensland.

$250 million solar farm to be constructed on a disused mango farm in the Upper Ross district, approximately 20km south-west of Townsville.

Construction of the single-axis tracking plant was planned to commence in April 2016 with completion in the first quarter of 2018. The power plant will feed electricity directly into the company‚Äôs existing 33/132kV substation.

Originally planned to be 100MW, in February 2017, Sun Metals announced that it had increased the planned size of the solar farm to 116MW. It was subsequently increased further to 124MW.

The solar farm began exporting power to the grid in May 2018.
