Whyalla Greensteel (Cultana) Solar

After purchasing the Arrium Steelworks in Whyalla and a controlling interest in the Australian battery maker Zen Energy, GFG Alliance has announced plans to install 1,000 MW of dispatchable renewable energy in and around Whyalla together with a 100 MWh lithium-ion battery to be built in Port Augusta.

The project is to include a 200 MW solar farm to be built in two stages. The first stage, within the Whyalla Council's industrial area, is to provide 80 MW. The second stage, on adjacent land owned by GFG Alliance, is planned to be completed in 2019.

An additional 480MW of solar capacity will be installed “in due course” to support the expansion of industrial capacity in Whyalla and industrial loads elsewhere in SA.

In March 2018, the South Australian Government announced that it would provide $10 in loan funding for the battery storage.

Construction of the first stage of the solar farm began in August 2018.
