The first stage of the $220 million Snowtown wind farm, has been officially opened. 47 wind turbines are now in operation. When all stages are completed the wind farm will consist of up to around 150 turbines each having a rated 2.1 MW capacity.
The wind farm is on the Barunga Range of hills west of Snowtown in the Mid-North of South Australia and around 150 km north of Adelaide. The Barunga Range is a north-south trending ridge of the Mount Lofty Ranges, and since it is generally treeless, rounded, and lies across the direction of the prevailing westerly winds, it provides an outstanding site for a wind farm.
