Victorian electricity provider, Powercor, has announced plans to install Australia’s largest battery storage system in the township of Buninyong, south of Ballarat.
The 2 megawatt-hour battery would provide about an hour of electricity supply during an outage to about 3,000 Powercor customers in the township which currently experiences an average of three outages a year.
Powercor believes that it will be quicker and more beneficial for its customers to install a battery as an alternate electricity source, rather than upgrading the existing network – as well as allowing the company to assess the role of batteries on its network
The lithium-ion battery, which will be housed in 40 foot shipping container, is currently being built in South Korea by Kokam.
