The Western Australian Government has moved to prevent future coal mining in the Margaret River area by terminating all pending applications for coal exploration.

After months of community protests, the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Norman Moore, has terminated all current applications within a 230-square kilometre zone at Margaret River.

There had been 25 applications pending for coal exploration licences.

Mr Moore said that “This decision sends a signal to the industry – applications will not be accepted to explore for or mine coal in this area."
