Mining giant Rio Tinto has switched on a 1.7 megawatt solar PV plant at its Weipa bauxite mine and processing facilities in north Queensland. As well as the mining operation, the plant will supply about 20% of the homes in the Weipa township which is not connected to a major electricity grid.

The solar array, which is the largest built to support a mining operation in Australia will save about 600,000 litres of diesel each year.
